St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and among the five most populated cities of Europe. St. Petersburg is the most Northern city in the world with population over 1 milloin; there are about 4,7 million residents in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg lies on the Eastern shore of the Gulf of Finland.

The city was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and has been known by several names throughout its history: St. Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad and once again St. Petersburg (since 1991).

In this "Venice of the North" rivers and canals make up one tenth of the area. There are over 340 marvellous bridges and 42 islands in delta of the river Neva. The historic city centre is one of the Unesco world heritage sites.
